A limited version Amazon Alexa was released 7 years ago on the 6th of November 2014 in the United States. The full version was released in June 28, 2015 in the United States. 

Other launch dates

On the 28th of September 2016, it was released in the United Kingdom. It was launched in Germany and Austria on the 26th of October, 2016. 

In the following year 2017, Amazon Alexa was launched in    India, Japan, Belgium, Bolivia, Bulgaria, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Estonia, Finland, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Panama, Peru, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Sweden, Uruguay.

In the year 2018, it was launched in Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, France, Italy, Spain and Mexico. On the 3rd of October 2019 Alexa was launched in Brazil. It’s latest launch date was on the 7th of December 2021 in Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

Why was the name Alexa chosen?

The name Alexa was chosen by Amazon as an inspiration from the library of Alexandria in Egypt. The purpose of choosing the name was to reflect the depth of Alexa’s knowledge just as the library of Alexandria contains a center of great knowledge.

Though this was the consideration when choosing the name, it has however had some negative effects leading to a decrease in the popularity of the name.
