2019 Essay Prompt

Consumer DNA genetic testing has become mainstream. More and more, people are voluntarily sharing their DNA with genetics companies to be tested for everything from ancestral heritage to finding potential genetic markers for illness. It has even become the norm for people to gift DNA testing kits to friends and family. All in all, more than 10 million people have sent their DNA for testing to consumer genetics companies like Ancestry DNA and 23andMe.

While learning about your familial heritage is interesting, sharing your uniquely identifiable DNA with testing companies comes with a huge potential for privacy risks. Many of those risks are not yet understood by the consumers of these products.

In 500 to 1,000 words, discuss the biggest potential privacy risks faced by consumers of DNA genetic testing companies. What might happen if human DNA information fell into the wrong hands? What can we do to benefit from the potential of DNA technology without losing our privacy?
